RIS (EndNote-friendly) citation export#186

When citations are exported, can they be either (1) also attached as a RIS file that can be imported into & managed by EndNote, or (2) provided in the Word .docx, but with the attached metadata to make the full citation list manipulable by the EndNote MS Word plugin?

The pain point is, if citations are exported without this, editing/adding to the reference list in MS Word becomes very work-intensive.

We should probably make RIS export a separate function on our export page, since I can’t imagine a scenario in which you wouldn’t just want all possible attributes included in your .ris.

This export method would be pretty simple from the user perspective e.g. allowing export of included, exluded, or all refs.

Yes– we should also think critically about this user situation:

  • I just finished my Manuscript on the site
  • I want to download it and format its citations for a journal
  • I want to use EndNote (or similar) to do so

I’d like to explore how our .docx export’s citation list could be ‘recognized’ by EndNote’s MS Plugin (if at all), just based on the use case that was brought to me.

It would be very cool. However, I’m guessing that’s not an open specification, so likely a fair bit of work on our end. For now, RIS export will be the best workable solution.

This was completed in 1.26.0; it’s available through the “Download” button on Study Inspector.

While you should get all the bibliographic data, we didn’t stuff the export with all of your gathered data (e.g. screening details, tags, DEs, etc.), because we’re really unsure of the correct formats. We’d love to hear from anyone looking for this data!
