Ability to edit already-created Expert Recommendation records#428

As far as I can tell, I’m not able to edit a record in a nest that I’ve added via Expert Recommendation––all I see is that I can delete it. Is there a workaround to this (other than just deleting the record and starting over)?

Yes! Jump over to Inspector & filter “Literature Search” to “Expert Recommendation”. You may do all the usual modifications/gathering with the records from here :)

Note: It has been requested in the past to make clicking a row in the expert recommendation table behave like inspector (opening the study modal). We decided at that time that it’s best to limit how records can be modified in bulk to one location, for best UX. If you think this is a travesty, we can revisit!

Thank you!

Would it make sense to have the option to edit records in the same screen where you’ve just added them? Maybe there could be a dropdown arrow in the column where there’s currently only an X. Not a huge deal, but would save me some clicks and feels intuitive!

Whoops, you beat me to the response! I would definitely like to be able to modify the record while I’m in the mode of adding records. Basically if I make a small error when I’m adding a record, it feels clunky to have to leave, go to Study Inspector, filter, find the study, and then edit instead of just clicking on a study that’s right in front of me

And to clarify, I wouldn’t be using bulk actions in this scenario (I think that’s definitely best left to Study Inspector!). Just would be making small corrections or tweaks at the individual study level for Expert Recommendations

@Jeffrey Johnson Let’s discuss at next convenience. Enough users have brought this to us that perhaps it’s time to get pragmatic.

My hesitation is that it may introduce poor habits/expectations for users. e.g. “Add individual references” is where gathering is done, or that any place a study is listed, it’s clickable. These are both hypothetical, but they should be discussed.

I feel like one way to potentially combat those expectations is to make it impossible to gather data, add tags, or do anything else that you can do in Study Inspector––instead, when you’re in Add Individual References and opt to edit a study, you could be greeted with the option to only edit the same fields that are available to you when you’re adding a record (title, abstract, etc.). Thanks for considering this!

Jeff and I agreed with that idea- thanks Alex! We’ll open up the standard bibliographic editing modal; idea being, yes we want it be easy to modify bibliographic data of the record that you manually added here, no we don’t want you to do any gathering from this page.
