Bring back drop down menu for placing new tag under parent tag#552

I like the ability to drag and drop tags, but it gets hard to do in nests with a lot of tags- the parent tag names aren’t always easy to see in the same field as the new tag, and it also requires looking to a different interface, instead of typing the tag name and choosing its position in the same place. It would be more convenient to use the old drop down menu. It’s also a hassle to switch to the tag configuration page when a new tag is made in the tagging interface. Putting in a vote to have the option to use the drop down menu again!

I also am having this issue. I am doing a common data elements style nest and the nature of this nest is that there are a lot of tags. It becomes very difficult to accurately drag and drop. The on the fly creation as well is difficult because there isn’t a way to specify where to create the tag anymore there (as far as I can tell), so my tag gets dropped into the ether. I would really appreciate having the ability to choose between drag and drop and a dropdown menu. Even just having a drop down menu in the on the fly creation would be a huge QOL improvement for me.

Thanks both! I understand the drag-and-drop becomes hard to manage when you have many tags, I’ll talk to the team about mitigations for large hierarchies.

Yea, this should be added back for at least on the fly tag creation. I believe we failed to consider that in our spec, sorry!

Thanks guys!!! Do you plan on adding it back to the main tagging hierarchy page? Just curious. I’m content with getting it back for on the fly but was curious on your end if there are some other underlying concerns with having both.

Good question– I’m not strictly opposed, but we did try to get the Tag Configuration page to be as simply presented as possible. If we can offer this without further complexity, I’m happy to, but we certainly don’t want it to be the main parent tag identification method. Thanks!

Fair! I’m wondering if in the create a tag window that the option to select a parent tag can be added but be optional. So you can still create a tag without specifying a parent tag and then drag/drop to place it, or you can send it directly underneath a parent tag. What are your thoughts on this? From my perspective, that would be the best of both worlds but obviously I’m not sure how complex an ask this is.

We’ll talk with design about it– I think the big hang up would be a loss of elegance/simplicity. We try to minimize “two ways to do one thing” as much as possible. But, exceptions for that are made in the name of supporting power users / frequent use cases :) Since DnD is a less obvious functionality, it may make sense to support a traditional UI alternative.
